Hi Squad,

🔥 Race Day Update – Live from the IM Tracker

As I put together this week’s newsletter, I’ve got the Ironman Tracker App running — and it’s a busy screen this afternoon.

Dan, Sharron, and Shannon are all out on course and looking strong. Their splits are steady, their pacing is solid, and they’re pushing through what looks like a great race day.

Let’s go Team — keep it rolling all the way to the finish line.

Swim Tip of the Week: Reduce Drag to Swim Faster

Triathlon Magazine recently highlighted a key truth about swimming: getting faster isn’t always about working harder — it’s often about reducing drag and improving how you move through the water.

1. Balance Your Body Position

Your lungs act like a buoy, lifting your chest and letting your legs sink. To fix this, keep your head looking straight down and gently press your chest toward the bottom of the pool. This flattens your body and dramatically reduces drag.

2. Swim on Your Side, Not Flat

The fastest swimmers rotate from side to side. Think of yourself as a long, narrow boat slicing through the water. Fully extend your lead arm and allow a brief glide — this creates a streamlined shape and reduces resistance.

3. Pull Straight Back With Intention

Once your body position and rotation are set, focus on pulling straight backward, not downward. A high‑elbow catch helps you push water behind you, creating forward momentum. Finish your stroke all the way to the hip.

The Big Takeaway

Better body position + longer glide + intentional pull = less drag, more speed, and lower energy cost. Small technical changes can make a big difference without increasing effort.

👨‍🏫 Meet Your Coach: Kenton Wilkinson

We’re excited to have Kenton Wilkinson coaching the Fall session. Kenton is a long‑time Cochrane resident who has been racing triathlon since his teens. He recently won the WASA Triathlon and also raced Ironman Canada. Over the past few seasons, he has dedicated a lot of time to improving his swim technique and is eager to help others do the same. His experience, enthusiasm, and technical focus will be a great fit for our fall program.

November: 3, 10, 17, 24

December: 1, 8, 15, 22

🌴 No Racing This Week — But Kona Is Coming Fast

A quiet weekend for our club athletes, but all eyes are shifting to Kona, now only a couple of weeks away. The countdown is officially on.

🚴 Big News from the Pro Field

In a surprising turn, Casper Stornes — the reigning world champion — is out of this year’s race after a bike crash earlier in the week. It’s a huge blow to Kristian, and it definitely changes the dynamics up front.

With Casper out, there’s a good chance we’ll see Sam Laidlow try to recreate his Roth strategy pushing hard on the bike with the top European men to open a big gap heading into the run.

🏆 Who’s Your Pick?

Head over to WhatsApp and post your podium predictions for this year’s Kona World Championship. Let’s see who nails it.

🏊‍♀️ Friday Night Swims Are Back!

Starting Friday, October 2nd, we’ll be running our Club Swim from 7:00–8:00 PM at SLS.

Open Format Swim

We keep Friday nights as an open‑format session to ensure lane availability for CTC, especially as the pool gets busy and heavily booked through the fall and winter.

Last year we had mixed success reserving lanes. If only a small number of non‑SLS members attend, we may cancel the official lane bookings and keep this as an informal club meet‑up instead.

I’m there most Fridays and will happily write a workout on the board if you’re looking for structure or a bit of guidance.

🔥 The Best Part: Hot Tub Social

As always, the post‑swim Hot Tub Social remains a club favourite.
