Hi Squad,
Apologies for not sending an email over the last couple of weeks. It’s been an incredibly busy few days with racing, work, and travelling.
First, a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered at the aid station for Calgary 70.3! It was awesome seeing so many familiar faces out there and getting cheered on as we all passed through. Your support really made a difference!
And congratulations to everyone who raced Calgary 70.3! I really enjoyed the entire weekend, both racing and being around the squad. I truly hope this race continues to return to Cochrane for many years to come. It’s a fantastic event, and having it so close to home makes it even more special.

Have You Ever Trained or Raced “Naked”?
This past week at Ironman Ottawa, I tried something I was a little nervous to do: race without relying on my Garmin.
As an engineer, I’ve always been obsessed with numbers, training to my zones, heart rate, power, pace, and all the other data that comes with triathlon. But going into this race, I knew I wasn’t in the shape I had hoped to be. So, I decided to race by feel.
I did have my watch on, but I made a conscious decision to almost completely ignore it. The only time I really paid attention to it during the entire race was at the start of the marathon, just to make sure I wasn’t heading out too fast.
For me, this completely changed the dynamic of the race. I felt much more present and far less stressed. Instead of constantly looking at numbers, I kept asking myself, How does this feel? I adjusted my effort based solely on the feedback from my body, rather than allowing the numbers on my watch to tell me how I was doing.
This isn’t a new concept, and it’s something I think more coaches should incorporate into their athletes’ training. We spend so much time learning what the numbers tell us that sometimes we forget to listen to what our bodies are telling us.
Here is an article from Triathlon Magazine on the subject.

I don’t see anyone on the race list, but I know a few of you are racing today! Good luck and have a great day!
T100 and Thunderbay X Terra
Next weekend is T100 Vancouver and X Terra. Both races I would like to try and get to soon! An old friend from University, Phil, helps organize X Terra Thunder Bay. If you bump into him, make sure to say hello for me.
